Western Australia's sheer scale means routes here tend toward touring epics rather than tight mountain blasts. The South West around Margaret River is a genuine highlight, while the North West and Pilbara deliver remote adventures for the prepared tourer.
Coastal Road
Winding through karri and marri forests between Busselton and Augusta, Caves Road is a relaxed and beautiful ride past wineries, caves and the Indian Ocean shoreline. The road surface is excellent and traffic is light midweek.
Outback Touring
Perth to Pemberton through Bunbury and Manjimup delivers changing landscapes from coastal plain to jarrah and karri forests. The giant karri trees at Pemberton are a highlight.
Mountain Pass
The forested switchbacks east of Bridgetown and Balingup offer WA's closest equivalent to mountain riding. Tight corners, shaded roads and good surfaces in a landscape quite unlike the coastal plain.
Outback Touring
The classic route north from Perth to Broome. Long empty stretches, roadhouses hundreds of kilometres apart and changing landscapes from wheat belt to spinifex desert. Requires proper preparation and a reliable touring bike.
